A short list of family oriented things to do in Dayton

January 11th, 2008

Are you moving to the Dayton area? Wondering what there is to do in Dayton? Fretting over how to entertain kids or house-guests in Dayton? Here’s a short list of fun and free (or almost) things to do in Dayton, with the emphasis on kid-friendly activities:

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. Kids love this place, and it really has something for kids of all ages, so if you are taking multi-age family members out- this place works perfectly. There is an admission fee, but this museum does keep kids occupied and interested for hours.

In Yellow Springs: You absolutely must take your kids to see the kids, as in baby goats, at Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm, 6880 Springfield-Xenia Rd (State Route 68). The farm is famous for it’s yummy ice cream, (you have no idea) but little ones will remember the goats that eat out of their hands! In fact, my son can tell you that he got to see a goat being born there! Oh my, did we have an interesting conversation on the way home….

The number one tourist attraction in the Dayton area is the Air Force Museum, Springfield St at Harshman Road, Dayton. The largest military aviation museum in the world, it’s a great place to spend any day, but it’s an especially good place to take the little kids during winter when they get a bit cabin feverish. The huge cavernous airplane hangers are a nice way to allow kids to wonder about and get a little exercise, and they love being able to get close to planes. While most planes are do-not-touch, they do have a few cockpits the kids can climb into- great photo opp, and a huge cargo plane that you can walk into. A wonderful place to take any aviation buff, and grandparents love to be there with the grandkids. If you happen to be there when a WWII vet is there, strike up a conversation- you and your kids will get the privilege to hear some fascinating stories…. don’t forget the Imax theatre.

Dayton has an awesome Metro park system that maintains parks throughout the area. Wegerzyn Gardens and Cox Arboretum are two that have many classes for kids. And there are miles and miles of bike paths throughout the Miami Valley. Is there a history buff in the family? Carriage Hill Farm in Huber Heights, is a living history farm and kids are welcome to explore and learn about life in Ohio in the 1800s. They can even help with farm chores! Carriage Hill also has a fishing lake and miles of hiking trails. No license is necessary to fish at the farm. Got a sports fan? You might want to catch an olde-time baseball game.

Is your son or daughter into the performing arts? Dayton is home to several nationally acclaimed dance companies: Dayton Ballet, and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company are two. While most performances require tickets, you can sometimes find both companies giving free exhibition performances at various festivities throughout the year. Just keep your eyes and ears open for announcements. The Dayton Philharmonic and other musical performances are sometimes given for free or discounted admission at noon time musical concerts at several venues in the area. Again, check around for details. And don’t forget to check out Clark State in Springfield for more performing arts.

Speaking of arts, the Dayton Art Institute is a nice place to spend the day. A spectacular building, it’s the home to a nice variety of art and important collections often stop here. My kids loved the Chihuly, and Chinese warriors exhibits, and my daughter found the Marilyn Monroe photo exhibit quite touching.

While you are downtown, check out the RiverScape area. Winter or summer- fun for the kids!

And did I mention the minor league sports teams? Okay it’s not free, but lawn seats at Fifth-Third Field to watch the Dayton Dragons are quite reasonable, and it’s very family friendly. The Dayton Bombers love kids and kids love hockey. There are many opportunities for catching freebies like T-shirts and coupons.

I could go on and on- Dayton, the Gem City, has plenty of gems to keep your kids busy. Caves, and waterfalls, boating and outdoor ice skating…. Have fun exploring!

I have been going to Young’s since I was a baby. I remember when it was just the ice cream building. We would sit on the one picnic table they had and enjoy ice cream cones. My favorite was strawberry - still is. To visit Young’s now and see how it has exploded is really cool. With all the great attractions they have, and there are a lot, the ice cream is still the best part. Of course if you go all the way out to Young’s, it is worth it to stop in Yellow Springs and hit the Tavern for a cold beer and a delicious meal too.

And a tiny little building at that! Now it’s a huge complex with putt-putt and a full menu restaurant, plenty of seating inside and out.

Yellow Springs also has the Bike Trail- fun for bikes and roller skating. And John Bryan State Park. Thanks for triggering all those details, David.
