A buzz about Sears

December 17th, 2007

Been to Sears lately? I hadn’t, but I’m a Buzz Agent so my assignment was to visit a Sears store and see what I think so there I was, shopping in a Sears store.

Start at the beginning: A Buzz Agent is someone who has the opportunity to try products and services and discuss them with people. You can sign up to be a Buzz Agent here.

So I signed up to buzz about Sears. I needed to visit a Sears that had been renovated as part of their plan to update and create “a more enjoyable and relevant shopping experience” as the promo material says. Three area Sears stores have been renovated: Tri County Mall, Eastgate Mall, and Florence Mall. I went to Tri County because it’s closest. And this shopping trip comes with some enticements: I received substantial coupons, so I knocked quite a bit off my purchase of hardware.

I haven’t shopped at a Sears in a long time, but I always park at the Sears housewares entrance at the Fairfield Mall. I’m not so good at remembering where I park my car, so I have learned to always park in the same row of whatever store I’m shopping at plus, unless it’s Christmas, no one parks at that entrance and you can get a close space. What did I find? It’s definitely an updated store. Instead of old-fashioned “departments” there are what they call “rooms” but I think of them as pods- kind of self-contained areas: Hardware, Women’s clothing, Housewares, all in somewhat unique areas. Instead of one department blending seamlessly into another, you walk into distinct pod-like areas.

Does the change enhance the shopping experience? Hmm. There were a lot of unfinished parts to the housewares pod, but I did see some new items I had never noticed like drawer pulls and lighting and a kitchen solutions pavilion. I went looking for a belt in the Women’s dept, but couldn’t find anything, so either their inventory was down, or there was some disorganization to the whole thing.

I did like the hardware dept. though, and found my way around that fairly easily, perhaps they are still in the moving in process with the other departments. They do have computer stations in the kitchen area, to make it easy for you to plan a remodel.

I think Sears is trying new things- that’s good. Would I go back? I would spend more time poking around the lighting and looking for drawer pulls definitely, and of course I would pick up some tools there. It’s a new idea for a traditional department store, and maybe someone without a preconceived idea about Sears might be receptive to embracing it as a modern store. I find the idea of such an established department store trying something that must be a radical change quite intriging, but I really don’t know if there was enough impact for me to change my mind about what Sears is.

Having said all that, I would definitely recommend checking it out, just to see it. And if you go, let me know what you think.

I do all my shopping through my mom! Mom, can you pick up an extra notebook for me on your way home from work? Mom, can you stop at Lowes and get me a new chain for my chainsaw so I can try to cut my leg off again?

She is usually like “I think me and you will probally go shopping tomorrow after I get off as I got some more Christmas shopping to do.”

Knowing how she spends 3 or 4 hours at a time shopping, I’m like.. “I can’t as I have to go with grandma tomorrow to Walmart.” She’s then like, “and just what have you talked your grandma into buying you from Walmart?” I’m like… “I don’t know yet, but I’ll figure out something. Maybe a new ink pen or something.” (I am addicted to ink pens - I just like to hold them!)

And yes, I know “me and you” is not the correct way of saying that, but that’s the way she said it!

    Hi Derek-
Any particular brand or style of ink pen? What color ink?

Tell your mom to buy your chains at Sears… How is your leg, btw?

Leg is healed. Still have a scar. No particular style or color ink pen but I usually only write in black. In nursing school we had to use black ink, so I’ve stuck with black but have no real preference. At times I will use red to mark stuff I have written that needs revising but that is about it. As for the pen itself, I like them small, If they feel good in my hand, I got to have it!
