The burning question on everyone’s mind: What’s an RSS Reader?

May 3rd, 2007

I am so glad you asked! But I’m not going to attempt to explain it. Why should I when clever geeks could do a much better job?

Jim Duncan writes an excellent community blog in Crozet VA. I would love for TheBrickRanch to be like Jim’s blog when it grows up, so I look in on occassion. The blog has lots of community content, but more importantly it has community involvement. It’s become a real forum for issues affecting Crozet. I don’t want TheBrickRanch to be my voice, I want it be our voice. But anyway…

Last look, I found a gem: He recently posted a great little video from CommonCraft.com that gives the Best Explanation of an RSS Reader and How To Set One Up and Why You Should Bother that I’ve ever seen. And since I’m still on the learning curve myself and have yet to earn the geek decoder ring, I can’t get the video link to work. But for our purposes that doesn’t matter; we will punt. When you visit the site, look for the video “RSS in Plain English”. It’s right there on the home page under both “Popular Right Now” and “All Time Greats”. And it’s at realcrozet, too.

I promise you will understand RSS Readers after you see the video, I promise! And if you don’t, let me know, I’ll come to your house and help you with it (At which time I’m also going to make you sit through a free no obligation CMA). Seriously, setting up an RSS reader will make your web perusing a breeze. You will thank me for it. An RSS Reader is such a great tool that while I debated waiting to post this until I could figure out the video link, that could take awhile. As Eeyore says, “Days…Weeks…Months…Who knows?” and I think it’s more important that you see this clever video now, anyway you can. Personally, I use Bloglines.com as my reader, it’s very user friendly, (trust me, if I can use it, it’s user friendly) and it appears to be set up just like the Google Reader in the video.

Why should you bother? My new mantra: It’s a GeekWorld, we’re just living in it.
Now, where’s that Kool-Aid?

Thanks so much for the kind words. The little corner in Crozet that I have developed is constant inspiration. Almost every week I meet somebody new who is a reader of realcrozetva, and they mention that they love it and are thankful for it. Few recognize or appreciate the value of simple altruism.
