Oakes Quarry Park: Reclaimed Real Estate in Dayton Ohio

September 10th, 2009

A new way for me to share real estate information with you: Utterli. This is my test drive, we’ll see how it goes.

This was recorded from my Blackberry during a walk with my dog, about 5 minutes in length. You might hear my boots crunching on the gravel occasionally, or maybe some outdoor sounds, but it’s my thoughts about how to take unwanted land and make it useful, something Dayton Ohio had better start seriously thinking about.

Note: In the recorded post, I mistakenly refer to the location of the dog park and Montgomery County Animal Shelter as I-75 and the “Breezewood” Exit. That’s incorrect, it’s actually the Benchwood Exit. The problem is that I recorded this very early one weekend morning, I’m a Dayton Old-Timer, that is a newer exit, and I personally travel to that location by way of city streets- I don’t think I’ve ever used that exit myself. A bit of Dayton history, if you’re interested: The original I-70/ I-75 Interchange was a beautiful and classic full cloverleaf interchange- the first in the country- so pristine that my brother, a civil engineer, says that aerial shots of this interchange were used to show what a perfect cloverleaf should look like. Unfortunately, a heavily traveled cloverleaf is a very dangerous thing, so we now have a new modern, safer interchange. However, in order to reconfigure the interchange, an I-75 Exit, just south of I-70, had to be moved. Thus Benchwood was born. To us old-timers, that is Stop Eight Road, and many of us took our driver’s test there. Today, that exit is a veritable restaurant row: Smokey Bones, Panera, Chipotle, Olive Garden, to name only a few. Sam’s Club, and Dayton’s Harley Davidson shop are part of that area, too.
