Why move to Dayton Ohio? “It’s time to reverse the wagon train”

April 23rd, 2009

I had an interesting conversation the other day. A potential buyer is looking online and finds me and gives me a call. He’s a Californian. He’s a family man. He’s a hard-working construction guy. We have a long talk.

He lives east of San Francisco and has been looking for a home out there for two years. He can’t afford anything, so he starts to look elsewhere. For some reason he looks at Dayton Ohio. “I could pay cash for a house in Dayton.” Yes, yes he could. I have to ask, “Why Dayton?”

“I’m sick of paying rent. I can’t afford to live in California and own a home. I want my kids to have some room.” That’s why people buy homes out here in Dayton, but there was something else, something more. The ties that had bound him to the west coast all these years were gone and now he was free to start a new life somewhere else. Why Dayton? “I don’t really know. My wife and I have been talking about this for a very long time and we think it’s time to reverse the wagon train.”

That struck me. “Time to reverse the wagon train”. I though about this guy, and I thought about what I know about pioneers and I thought about the mental toughness and physical hardiness required to pack up everything you have and move to the unknown. Move to a place that allows you to create a life you dreamed of, rather than a life that has been defined for you.

Pioneer life. Is that what Dayton Ohio represents? We are often characterized as small town, which is very often a snarky code for small minded. My response: visit. We have a land of abundance here, we have Blue Gold, we live in a Green Belt. We have world class dance companies. A fantastic art museum. A clean and pleasant park system. And a fast-growing world of smart Dayton pioneers. You can be part of that, if you’ve got the right stuff.

I’m wondering if California has shut out its own pioneers- a victim of its own success. The sons and daughters of the pioneers who moved there to create a better life with their bare hands and hard work can’t live there any more. California, once the mecca of pioneers the world over, has become a world so exclusive that those hardy souls who refuse to be subjected to life as a renter, want out. They are no longer willing to fill the pockets of someone else and are choosing instead to strike out to provide their own roof over their family’s head.

Modern pioneers! Eastward Ho! Pack up the SUV and trek to Dayton Ohio. It ain’t all sunshine and rainbows here, but if you’re a scrappy type, you might find that the very roof over your little one’s heads, is also the place you can truly call your own.

And the hardy Midwest welcomes you home.

Well said Teri. Hopefully- lots of people will start questioning the value of living in high dollar cities.

 in 2005, the talk was about living where you want to live, in 2009, it’s about not living where you don’t want to live any more.

Y’all might just capitalize on the very thing Californians thought we owned; a healthy lifestyle. Our weather, beaches, desert, and mountains make California the most beautiful state in the country…BUT…

we gotta water problem…and….organic food costs a lot to grow/raise…and…it’s expensive to live here (which has us all working hard with raised stress levels).

    Dayton…for your health. Whodathunkit?

Great point on this post! If we could get more local employers hiring again, the true value of the Miami Valley would make us the envy of everyone. For all its faults, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. It’s great here, with a great number of opportunites.
