Shopping in Dayton for the shopping challenged; it’s all about the service

July 24th, 2007

I’m not the one who should be writing about shopping in Dayton as I’m missing the shopping gene. I am not sure what happened but I just don’t do shopping-as-recreation. Never have. And malls give me the heebie jeebies. My friends understand this and don’t ask me to “go shopping”, (thank God for good friends). So what is this post about? It’s about shopping in Dayton- for those of us who hate to shop.

We all have to go into a store sometime. Food is a necessity and doesn’t arrive on your door step all by itself. Clothes make the man so we have to find those somewhere as well. And I don’t buy clothes without trying them on first, so off to a store I go. Although, I am one of those people…This is how much I hate shopping: I go into a store, try on twenty different shirts, find the one that fits well, and buy it in 4 different colors, always black, white, navy, and either green or beige. There. Shopping is done. Can I go home now? And once I find an online store that works, I’ll eliminate the clothes shopping all together. Hooray. Yep, I know I’m outside the norm here, but we all have our eccentricities, don’t we?

Back to shopping for people like me, and I know I’m not the only one. We go to boutique stores, right? We like small stores that you can go into and have a customer service oriented experience. And that’s what this post is about. The importance of that customer service oriented experience, because that is ultimately what is going to get me into a store- there has to something more than the merchandise. If I want merchandise, I’ll do eBay, thank you.

I need to be wooed and courted and treated like I’m appreciated. I love going into News Readers in Fairborn because they always remark about how much they enjoyed the book you are buying, or they can recommend something you might enjoy, or they may just let you know what their favorite Necco wafer flavor is, as I always buy Neccos when I’m there. Love Neccos- clove is my favorite. Conn’s Coffee Cafe, I’ve already told you about, but it’s the same thing. I want to connect person-to-person with someone, otherwise, I’m shopping online. In other words, give me a reason to show up.

So, with this in mind, I was skeptically happy to hear about The Greene getting a new tenant- Von Maur. This store is supposed to rival Nordstrom’s in the customer service aspect. We will see, but it’s nice to know that stores are using customer service, as opposed to merchandise, as their main pull.

And with so much online, so much merchandise, so much information, so much of everything you want to know about anything you want to know about, if you ain’t giving great customer service, then customers are going to go elsewhere. Because frankly, I don’t think it matters if you are selling Necco wafers or, well, houses, you’d better have something else to bring to the table.

Amazon.com! What did we do without it? I even have my favorite sellers on Amazon.

Let me know how that 4-hour work week works out for you. ;)
