Project BrickRanch: Elsa’s house

June 29th, 2007

Elsa shared with us her quest for a new life: Her dream, her goals, and the work it takes to make it all happen; and Elsa bought a home! And her home does need some work so now it’s her home to change and modify and remodel however she desires.

If you read the first post about Elsa, you know she is a survivor. She has a great outlook on life, and the determination to make things happen. Right now she is busy settling into her home, renovating, and doing all the things that can turn a house into home.

While poking around the internet one day, I found RemodelingMySpace.com. They are holding a “Blog About Your Remodel” contest with a grand prize of $5000.00, a People’s Choice Award of $1000.00, and a random prize of $250.00. Because Elsa was in the process of purchasing a home, and her home is going to need remodeling, here’s what I thought: I blog and she’s going to be remodeling, why don’t we team up? I could blog about her remodel, hopefully getting some traffic and exposure to my blog, she might end up $5000.00 richer. Well it sounded like a win/win situation to me. So I asked Elsa if she would be willing to let me document her progress: take pictures of the remodel and post updates on TheBrickRanch. Elsa was up for some fun and the thought of a chance to win some extra money to help with remodeling sounded pretty great too-  she agreed. Here we are! I just signed up last night, and we are waiting to hear what the next step might be.

I’m really excited about this. Elsa is lot of fun and has some pretty strong opinions about how she is going to make her house a home. I’m a fan of strong opinions, whether I agree with them or not. I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping her accurately document what she is doing, but I also hope that this will give other home buyers some inspiration and maybe some of you remodel-ers can provide some inspiration to Elsa.

The home Elsa bought is a  Suburban model brick ranch, with 4 bdrm, 2 baths. This home gave her the room she needed, and was in her price range, but it needed some work just to make it livable. Still, it has plenty going for it. There are new windows, and a new patio door, new kitchen flooring, and new interior doors- although they are unfinished. The yard needs some work as well, but it’s a nice size. Her home inspection gave her a outline for all the things that needed to be done and there’s plenty of very basic but crucial work to do both inside and outside the home.

We will be posting about the work that needed to be done before she could move into it; and then of course there is the fun part- making the house a home. Elsa has some plans for that as well, and we will do our best to keep you up-to-date on her progress.

Is there a possibility you could - within the limits of the rules - get a few local vendors or rehab pros to donate time and/or materials to facillitate the work? Would be nice to get a mention or story in a top-notch blog, especially within their own community. And who doesn’t want to be quoted in an interview?!?

Hi Art- Great minds. Yep- that’s the plan. Got a few interviewees lined up already. We’ve been working on this for sometime now, and hopefully I can do Elsa’s remodel justice.

I just happened upon this website and will visit again, since I also live in a Suburban and am in great need of some home improvement inspiration. Thanks for being here!
