Dayton Oldies Radio

April 11th, 2007

Personality test: Do you; 1) BYOM (bring your own music) in the car, or 2) scan or seek in the car, or 3) are your radio stations locked in? As for me, I’m a BYOM or scan person. Commercial radio stations don’t interest me. I hate commercials- HATE them. Don’t want to hear them, don’t listen to them, change the channel during the breaks. I want to hear music, and I’m really not that particular. I’ll listen to most anything for awhile. My MP3 has all sorts of stuff: rockabilly, swing, R&B, classical, jazz, show tunes, pop, rock… hmm. Anyway.

You may or may not know that Dayton Ohio has its very own radio station, Dayton Oldies, WSWO, 97.7 or 101.5. It’s only a few years old, but they are growing. They play all types of oldies; you can hear classic R&B, pop, novelty songs, rock. That’s what makes this station such a treasure. Most oldies play one genre of oldies, you know, classic rock, or classic country. This station plays a wide variety of music and eras, but wait, there’s more! It’s public radio! Oh yeah, baby, that means zero commercials! Heaven.

That also means that it’s strictly volunteer. That’s people doing something that they love because they love it. Passion, is what we are talking about. I should disclose I’m a volunteer there, but I am in no way including myself in the “passion” group because I’m only in the typing pool. I’m not spending my weekends cranking out broadcasts, or my evenings wiring soundboards or painting or mounting antennas. These people live and breathe this…thing, this baby, this creation, this labor of love, and it shows in the attention to detail, the constant tweaking to get things just so, even in the music that gets played. And I volunteer because it’s a great station and it’s lovely to be around people who feel passionately about things.

It also means that they count on donations (Oh! Was that a commercial?). Check out the tunes, check out the website, see for yourself if it isn’t worth the price of a few cups of coffee. It’s a radio station in Huber Heights, for God’s sake, it’s worth it. But mostly, just listen to the station because it’s great stuff.

Your 4,000 plus song title library has made an ex-Eagle listener out of me. The other day I heard you play
“Small, Sad Sam ( a spoof on Jimmy Dean’s “Big, Bad John ). I never heard this song before. I laughed so hard that if I hadn’t have had my seat belt fastened I probably would have fallen out of my car. I would like you to maybe add a few more titles to your library.

    Joni Mitchell: Chelsea Morning
    Big Yellow Taxi
You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio
Raised On Robbery ( one of my all-time personal favorites )
    Help Me
    Free Man In Paris

    Emerson, Lake and Palmer:
Still…You Turn Me On ( another one of my personal faves )
    Lucky Man
    Pictures At An Exhibition

Blind Faith: I Can’t Find My Way Home ( a truely great lost classic )

    Cream: I Feel Free
    Strange Brew
    Sunshine Of Your Love
    Tales Of Brave Ulysses
swlabr ( after all these years I have no idea how to pronounce this or what it means )
    White Room
There is also a host of southern rock classics, too numerous to mention, by groups such as: The James Gang, Wet Willie, .38 Special, The Allman Bros. Band, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage, etc. I would like you to consider as well.

As you have figured out by now I love my classic rock — shame The Eagle forgot how to play it — but their loss is your gain.

Mary- It’s truly an asset to the community. I’ll let Brad know you’ve stopped by and see if he can add to the conversation. They do have a website: http://www.daytonoldies.com I have a link on the sidebar that will take you there. I can tell you that these are some of the finest people I’ve ever met, and they are truly passionate about what they are doing. You can tell that when you listen, can’t you?

I heard a song that I haven’t heard in 20 years and can’t identify it. It was “Abagail Beacher ,our history teacher ” and talks about how non conformance she is and her red surfboard at the end of the song. I heard it on Friday june 29 th at 9:15 on 97.7 I wonder if they have a place that they publish their playlist?

    Hi Buddy-
A play list is a great idea. As you may know, it’s all volunteers at the station, so I’m not sure anyone has been able to do that yet, but I’ll pass your comment on to Brad. He knows the playlist, so I’m sure he knows which song you are talking about.

And I can speak for the station here: We are thrilled that a song sparked your memory and more interest in the station. We love to hear comments like yours, and hear them regularly. That’s why we know we fill a void in the Dayton radio world.

We are evaluating new computer software that will allow the display of what’s playing and what recently has played. Any change is a cost the we have the evaluate - we must pay rent and electricity first…….

“Abigail Beecher” is by Freddie Cannon and peaked at #16 on the charts in 1964.

I’ll reiterate the same…send the comments to daytonoldies@aol.com and Brad will pass them along to the appropriate people. The station website (linked at the right of the blog front page) has all our contact info.

Good to hear that people are enjoying the music and hopefully they will pardon the minor disruptions when I and the rest of the sports guys come out of hibernation for football games on Friday nights. I am already working on preparing for the season and securing press box access for the six road games.
